Belleville Lake Water Ski Club members gathered Aug. 25 to host the club's nnual ski clinic for The Girls Town Foundation of Belleville.
Club members met the girls at the Van Buren Park beach, and took them out to enjoy an evening on the water and have an opportunity to learn to water ski.
"Our members enjoy sharing their love of water sports and this is a great way to pass that experience on, the girls have a great time and are always eager to learn," said club president Justin Juriga.
Every girl got up on skis, he added, and "most of them were successful on the first attempt.
"Some were asking if they could do it again tomorrow," he said.
Originally known as the Belleville Lake Stump Jumpers, the ski club was organized in 1970. Over the last 34 years, many club members have won state, regional, national and international water ski titles. This successful history can be attributed to the naturally protected ski site that Belleville Lake offers, according to Juriga. The club currently has more than 70 members. The group focuses on summer fun, skill education and safety awareness.
"We always have maintained a focus on community involvement as well," Juriga said.
In December, the club will host its fifth annual Polar Bear Water Skiing Event, which has raised more than $250,000 for local charities in the last four years. The club also produces a ski show annually for the Strawberry Festival.
