Tigers' roar stifled in season debut

LaPointe: I am disappointed with how we played

By Dave Merchant, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: August 30, 2007

The season opener is usually one of the biggest games of the season for a football team.

After Saturday's game the Belleville Tigers might not want any more day games on Saturday.

Things started out slow and didn't get much better in the season opener for Tigers' football at Eastern Michigan University in the Big Day III Prep Showdown.

Belleville fell behind early and never really caught up losing to the Plymouth Wildcats 28-6.

Plymouth scored first in the first quarter on a 19-yard pass from C.J. Gregory to Connor McKinney. After the extra point the Wildcats led 7-0. It stayed that way until the second quarter when Belleville scored on an 18-yard pass from Rod Barksdale to Anthony Roberts.

The play was set up by a 58 yard run from scrimmage by Kierre Daniels. The Tigers trailed 7-6 after the missed extra point with 9:53 left in the first half.

Plymouth came right back with a 45-yard pass for a touchdown by Gregory to Ronnie Goble to lead 14-6 with eight minutes and change to play in the half.

Plymouth added another score late in the first half and one in the third quarter to end the scoring.

Longtime Belleville Coach Bob LaPointe was not very pleased with the outcome of the game on Saturday.

"I am disappointed with how we played," LaPointe said. "We are young and inexperienced."

He said there were a couple of kids he could have used that were not present at the game and that didn't help matters.

"I thought the game we be much closer," he said. "We moved the ball well and then we kept making mistakes. The films will show us a lot," he added. "I thought we played solid at quarterback."

Plymouth Coach Mike Sawchuk said he was pleased with the win.

"This was an awesome win for us," he said. "Belleville has a lot of team speed and you have to play contain against them.

"They are a classy program with some great kids."

Life for the Tigers (0-1) will not get any easier this week as they battle at Dearborn High tonight at 7 p.m. in Mega Red league action against the Pioneers.
