Council OK's request for summer events

By William Zilke, Staff Writer

Special events in Belleville have taken on a new flavor, and one new location, following Monday night's city council meeting.

Belleville Area Council for the Arts music director and Party time Entertainment's Carla Gibson presented the city council with a proposal that will whet the appetites of music lovers.

"For the 2008 Music in the Park season the Belleville Area Council for the Arts would like to have a vendor at the park during the concerts," Gibson said.

"The vendor would sell inexpensive concessions to the concert patrons. These concessions could include such items as hot dogs, chips and drinks like water, soda or lemonade.

Warren Garland of Garland Enterprises came to the city council meeting with a letter of recommendation from the Mt. Clemens Downtown Development Authority.

Arthur Mullen, their executive director, called Garland, "an integral part of our successful Bud Light Riversight and Sound concert series for over 20 years.

Garland appeared with a proof of insurance for events but the city council

asked all necessary permits be pulled.

If everything is in order, the council would give Garland the go ahead to serve from a cart at the Music in the Park series.

Billy Brandt and Jill Jack are an award-winning acoustic folk/ country music duo that take the stage at 3 p.m. on July 20.

Other upcoming shows include Acoustic Stories, a show of classic rock covers using acoustic guitars and one of the premier multi- percussionists in Michigan on July 27.

Award winning Elvis and Buddy Holly tribute artist Chris Solano- a longtime Strawberry festival favorite- brings his electric live show to the gazebo in Victory Park on Aug. 3

The Belleville Community Band celebrates its 10-year anniversary on Aug. 10 and Steve Berkemeier wraps up the summer concert series on Aug. 17.

It's hard not to think of eating outside and listening to music without thinking of the Taste of Belleville event.

Due to the proposed construction on Main Street, the event was moved temporarily to Victory Park.

However, the Belleville Central Business Community's Bill Wolters and Bob Stoner appealed to the Belleville city council to consider moving the site back towards the bridge and downtown.

"We took a look at Victory Park and saw problems with parking and the Bridge Walk," Wolters said.

The CBC would like to move the event back downtown with vendors on Liberty Street.

"We have four 10x20 canopies and seating with approximately 300-400 folding chairs," Wolters said.

N. Liberty Street would be closed from 3:30- 9p.m. on Aug. 21.

"We would start set up at 3:30 p.m. and have the Bridge Walk from 5:30- 6 p.m.," Wolters said.

"We would have acoustic music from 6-8 p.m. and clean up from 8-9 p.m."

Wolters said they hope to have 17- 20 vendors.

"We look at this as a one year deal," he said.

The council approved the proposal to spread the event from Doane's Landing to further south on N. Liberty Street.
