Festival offers singers a chance

Categories available for all ages to participate

Carla Gibson, the entertainment director of the Bellevilel National Strawberry Festival and the owner of Main Street Entertainment is always looking for undiscovered, local talent.

She created the Strawberry Idol competition for the Belleville National Strawberry Festival and dozens of singers who may not have had the venue to get their first break, were given on opportunity to perform live.

Entertainers have taken advantage of the chance Gibson gave them.

April Gibson, Sarah Lenore, Tony Thompson and others made the jump from the Strawberry Festival to prestigious events like the WYCD 99.5 Detroit Country Downtown Hoedown to share the stage with Gretchen Wilson and others.

"I want singers to know there are opportunities out there," Gibson said.

The following talent competitions are open to the public:

  • The Hamburg Family Fun Fest Talent Search 2008 requires contestants to qualify at a preliminary round held at Zukey Lake Tavern.

    Those ages 15 & under have a preliminary round at 8 p.m., on Tuesday, April 29.Adults (ages 16 & over) have their preliminary round at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13 and the open competition faces a preliminary round at 8 p.m. on Tues., May 27.

    The finals for all divisions will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 14.

  • The †Sumpter Country Festival's Sumpter Idol hits the stage at 2 p.m. on Sat., May 24 for singers 15 years and under and at 4 p.m. for those aged 16 and over.

  • For local singers, looking to make their first big impact, Gibson's hugely successful Strawberry Idol competition begin at 1 p.m. for the Junior Division (ages 12 & under), at 3 PM for the Teen Division (ages 13 -19- years old) and at 5 p.m. for the Adult Division on Sun., June 15.

  • On Sat., June 14, the WYCD Colgate Country Showdown is open for singers ages 20 and over.

  • The Blissfield Idol competition heats up during the Blissfield River Raisin Festival at 1 p.m. on Sun., July 13.

  • The Kalamazoo County Fair Talent Search 2008 is ready for excitement at 2 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 9 with the Junior Division (ages 15 & under), at 4 PM for the Adult Division (ages 16 & over) and at 6 p.m. for all ages.
