The Council is to be made up of nine residents living in the DDA area, 18 and older. The council is on a volunteer basis. There will be a sign-up sheet posted at City Hall.

Belleville police force to hire new officer: Belleville City Council members Monday night approved the hiring of a new police officer to replace an officer who retired several months ago.

Police Chief Gene Taylor said the department is currently down approximately three officers, with a current officer having to take a 30-day leave for personal reasons.

Candidates for the position have been screened and interviewed by the Civil Service Commission and they have presented a recommendation to Taylor.

Taylor added that since the department has been short, overtime costs have increased greatly and that hiring the new officer would represent a cost savings in that area.

Budget meeting and special meeting set for Monday: The first of several budget meetings for the city of Belleville is set for 5:30 p.m. May 12 at City Hall with a special meeting set at 7:30 p.m., where Council members will be discussing the city manager issue.

During Monday night's meeting, city officials rejected a contract from the Michigan Municipal League to act as headhunters and aid in the city's search for a city manager. However, they did agree to invite MML representatives to the special meeting in order to answer some questions and clear up confusion relating to the contract and costs associated.

Belleville Relay for life fund-raiser set: A fund-raiser for the Jazzercise team participants in this year's Relay for Life event is set for May 12 at Applebee's Restaurant on Belleville Road. Diners at the restaurant will have 20 percent of their bill automatically donated to the Relay for Life event.

For more information, and to print off a coupon that should be presented to your server, visit www.relayforlife.org and click on Find Relay Events in the upper left hand corner.

The Belleville Relay for Life - set for May 17 and 18 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds on Quirk Road - is a day-long event with a number of different presentations and ceremonies including an opening speaker and a luminaria ceremony that evening.

Business after Hours with Romulus Chamber set: The Belleville Area chamber of Commerce will host a joint business after hours with the Romulus Chamber of Commerce at 5:30 p.m. May 15 at the Embassy Suites, 8600 Wickham Road in Romulus.

This event is free to all chamber members and their guests.

There also will be a mini-expo and there are still tables available for $25.00.

Please BACC executive director Kelly Boelter if you will need a table to showcase your business. For more information, call 697-7151.

Cash for broken gold jewelry: Trinity's Boutique, 504 Main St Suite A, will hold a Gold Party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Receive cash for your old, unwanted or broken gold jewelry.

Get ready to clean out your jewelry box and discover how much your treasure is worth.
