"That is decided by the Board of Trustees, Van Buren Township doesn't have a civil service board," Supervisor Cindy King said. "We don't meet again until next month."
Nicholai resigned suddenly and his name last week was removed from the township's Web site's list of fire officials. No reason was given for his resignation.
"We haven't posted it yet but we will do that soon," Public Safety director Jerry Champagne said. "Battalion Chief Ronald Folks will be temporarily be in command."
Champagne was the deputy police chief of Romulus before taking the reins of the Van Buren Township.
"It is a challenge with both the police and fire departments," he said.
Both Champagne and King said they were unable to comment on the unexpected resignation of Nicholai who has served the township since being hired in 2006. He replaced former fire chief Al Smolen.
The next regular scheduled Van Buren Twp. Board of Trustees meeting is 7:30 p.m. on May 6 at the township hall, 46425 Tyler Road.
