Tyler Elementary School's Parent-Teacher Organization is hoping the community will help pay for a climbing wall for the school.
The school's physical education department has been working towards raising money to purchase a rock wall.
Rock walls are useful in the academic environment in many ways. They provide the physical challenge of a student's abilities, promote student's self-esteem and are a great deal of fun.
After reviewing rock walls from other companies, Tyler selected Everlast Climbing Industries to provide the rock wall.
Tyler chose to purchase the "traverse wall," which consists of walls that are 4 feet by 8 feet that will be along one side of the gymnasium. Mats will be placed underneath the rock wall, and the mats are locked over the rock wall when it is not in use.
The wall has a 3-foot red safety line. Students will be required to traverse the entire wall with their feet below this line before they are allowed to traverse higher.
The physical education department and students have been working to raise funds for the past two years by selling sweatshirts, T-shirts, snacks and various other products.
They have raised approximately $3,000 of the $10,000 total price. The staff hopes to have the rock wall installed before pupils return to school in the fall.
To make this happen, members of Tyler's PTO are asking the community to help in the funding of the rock wall.
