Van Buren school board members might be rescinding a previously adopted resolution to freeze new attendance deviation applicants and to not allow new school of choice applicants for one year for Savage and Elwell schools.

During its March 10 regular meeting, school board members paved the way for an elementary school boundary shift sending more than 100 students from Savage to Elwell. Trustee Bob Binert made the additions for school of choice and attendance deviation freezes in his motion and it was adopted with a split vote.
Communications Director Paul Henning said the board set a special meeting soon after that to further discuss those changes because administration had been running into problematic situations with parents.
"I think that the board may be leaning toward rescinding the freezes," Henning said. "There is a very good possibility that it will be on Monday's agenda."
During the special meeting, held on March 17, Henning said that school board members further discussed the ramifications of freezing new applicants for that year-long period. After the decision was made, Henning said a number of confused parents started calling into the administration and they soon realized that the decision might cause more problems than they originally thought.
"I know I took one phone call from a mother asking about her kid who is an attendance deviation and whether her other son is going to be grandfathered into kindergarten, he would have to go to a different school. So there is some confusion out there."
